I agree I disagreeMarostica fell under the rule of the Scaligeri family after the conquest of Vicenza by Cangrande della Scala in 1311. The Scaligeri rule applied throughout the 1300s and ended in 1387. A border outpost for the Scaligeri family in the conflict against the Paduans, Marostica was involved in the Paduan-Scaligeri war of 1312-1314, during which the borough, which had been set up and developed around the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, east of the walled town which was later built, was attacked and plundered by the Paduans while the strong castle on the Pauso hill resisted. At a later stage, in 1338, Marostica fell under the rule of Sicco da Caldonazzo, even if only for a few months, after which it went back into
the firm hands of the Scaligeri. These events prompted the Scaligeri to conceive the fortifications of the town in a new way and in the 1300s they decided to build castles, thus implementing the walled town with its two castles, Castello Inferiore and Castello Superiore. The Castello Inferiore appears as a bulky structure with a quadrangular crenellated wall and a tall keep. It was mostly built using local sandstone and limestone rock, with a scarce use of bricks, a quite expensive material. There are two drawbridges on the moat, to the north and to the south of the respective facades. A wall-mounted turret (bertesca) stood above the entrance to the south, which has now been rebuilt. The two inner porticos - one on the ground floor supported by solid brick pillars and the one on the upper floor - are of great interest. Over time, the Castello Inferiore became less of a stronghold and more of a public palace, the palace of the Podestà (Governor) who lived there in the Venetian age, administering civil justice and overseeing the proper governance of the community. The Consiglio dei Trenta (Council of the Thirty), the town council in the Venetian age, met at the Castello Inferiore. It also hosted the prisons, from the Venetian age to the first decades of 1900s.
